| Psychiatry is a medical science that studies and treats mental disorders in people. The term was first introduced by Johann Christian Reil in 1808. Psychiatrists can treat a great many mental illnesses. Psychiatrists work around the world. Psychiatrists help patients to deal with depression, treat sleep disorders etc. There are a lot of mental disorders and phobias that need specialist medical treatment. Among the commonest mental illnesses are insomnia, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, abnormally high pressure moods, diverse personality disorders. One of the common mental illnesses now is anorexia. It starts when a person, usually a young girl stops eating or consumes less to lose weight. Yet, starving causes a compete loss of appetite and disastrous health problems, for instance infertility in females. Schizophrenia is another serious mental disorder. It has been studied by psychiatrists for a long time. People suffering from the mental disorder percept the reality differently. Bizarre delusions, abnormality in speech, unarranged thinking pattern, paranoia are typical of schizophrenic patients. Schizophrenics usually suffer from severe depressions and anxiety disorders. Schizophrenic people live less than mentally healthy people. One of the reasons is a high suicidal rate among schizophrenics. Although it is not hereditary, Schizophrenia tends to affect family members. Substance abuse, including hard drugs, alcohol, is a common problem to be treated by specialists. Social problems, such as unemployment, poverty and homelessness, are common as well. PSYCHIATRY deals with mental illnesses that are resulted from chemical imbalances in the brain. The way people think, their beliefs, their culture and experience, life situations and a lot of other things form their psyche which can be severely challenged due to circumstances. A professional through a psychiatric aid and medications try to revive the balance in the brain. It requires a lot of effort and time to recover. However, deep emotional traumas rooted in childhood are difficult to treat. |
